Cornell, A.B.
Andy Paul graduates Cornell. Five years later, an MBA from Harvard Business School. The formative cooling — long before anything is visible at the surface.
Hambrecht & Quist Venture Partners
A year in the venture capital group at H&Q after HBS — the first time real risk capital met the bench that would define the next four decades.
Sixteen years at Welsh Carson
Joins Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe — Managing General Partner, Management Committee, jointly responsible for healthcare investing. Lead partner on 38 healthcare investments, eleven public-company board seats. The firm grows to roughly $12B.
Enhanced Capital Partners founded
Founder & Chairman of a specialty-finance and tax-credit lending platform — ultimately raises more than $1B across vintages.
Departs Welsh Carson
Leaves WCAS after sixteen years. The next two years are spent designing what would become a permanent-capital platform — no outside investors, one source.
Sopris Capital founded
Founded in Aspen as the principal investing vehicle of Andy Paul. A single source of long-term capital. No LPs. The first conviction.
Enhanced Healthcare Partners
Co-founds Enhanced Healthcare Partners — a roughly $680M lower-middle-market healthcare platform across vehicles. Exits active leadership in the late 2010s.
Sopris Growth takes shape
Mark Groner joins. The early-stage healthcare-and-tech-enabled franchise begins to formalize as today's Sopris Growth. Internal investment professional base reaches double digits.
Real Estate platform forms
Co-GP investments and sub-institutional LP secondaries launch, $1M–$15M, where inefficiency runs deepest in the asset class.

Special Situations launches
Daniel Wedman builds the practice — bitcoin-mining infrastructure, ASIC arbitrage, AR, space launch, and 3D-printed homes.
Bob Mosteller joins as CFO
The CFO function institutionalizes alongside the firm's growing operating footprint. Andy Paul commits the first of three tranches toward a $10M gift funding Jazz Aspen Snowmass's permanent home.

The rebrand & merge
Five strategy sites unify into one property. Thirty-seven team members. Six US cities. Seventy active investments. Two hundred fifty collective years.
Sixteen years at Welsh Carson taught one thing: find the durable, then leave it alone.
Andy Paul founded Sopris Capital in 2002 in Aspen, as the principal investing vehicle that would carry forward what he had learned across the prior two decades.
He arrived at Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe in 1984, fresh out of Harvard Business School and a year at Hambrecht & Quist Venture Partners. Across sixteen years there, he served as a Managing General Partner on the Management Committee with joint responsibility for healthcare investing, sitting on the boards of eleven companies that completed public offerings. He left in 2000 to found Enhanced Capital Partners; co-founded Enhanced Healthcare Partners in 2005; and in 2002 began what would become today’s Sopris — a single source of permanent capital, no outside LPs.
He lives in the Roaring Fork Valley with his wife Margaret. The succession is being executed quietly and structurally — Taylor in Growth, Alex in Private Equity, Jack in Real Estate. One son per strategy line.
